The Systems Administrators' Guild (SAGE) was founded to meet many needs of the people who administer and manage computing systems. As the organization grows, we want to have a clear vision of just what those needs are and how they should be addressed. In that light, working groups were formed at the SAGE meeting in San Antonio in June. Each group is chartered to discuss a topic of interest and determine if it is a viable candidate for action on the part of SAGE. The working groups can recommend against pursuing a topic any further. If you have strong feelings in either direction, you should join the group and present your opinion. If determined to be viable, the working group also has the charter to draft for the SAGE board a proposal which outlines possible methods of addressing the issue at hand. Below is the list of working groups (current as of June 25th, 1992). Listed are the names of the group, the leader, the email address that the working group will be using, and a description of some of the topics, and goals the group will attempt to address. If you feel that there is a topic not covered by these groups that SAGE should pursue, you should send email to describing the topic. If you are interested in joining one or more of these groups, send email to with a body message of "help" or to and you will be sent further information on subscribing to the various lists. 1. Conferences and Workshops - Steve Simmons (scs@iti.org) - sage-conf@usenix.org The conferences and workshops group will focus on public activities of both academic and practical use for systems administration, including involvement in the USENIX LISA conference. 2. Publications - Bryan McDonald (bigmac@erg.sri.com) - sage-pubs@usenix.org The publications group is chartered to put together a series of proposals related to the various publications that SAGE wants established. In the immediate future the pubs group will be asked to assist in the publication of the first issues of newsletter segments within "login:". Long term goals include proposals concerning an independent newsletter, a technical journal, software tool collections, and any other ideas the committee can collect. 3. Electronic Information Distribution - Mark Verber (verber@parc.xerox.com) - sage-online@usenix.org The electronic information distribution working group will identify existing information sources that would be of use to SAGE members, new types of information that should be gathered/produced, and make proposals for the effective distribution of this information. Existing sources should include reprints of papers/articles and mailing-list/USENET news archives. New information sources might include specially written technical/positional papers and custom databases such as vendor neutral list of bugs. Distribution methods will include WAIS or other information servers, anonymous ftp/uucp, and CDrom. 3. Education - Pat Wilson (paw@northstar.dartmouth.edu) - sage-edu@usenix.org The education working group's initial goal is to outline possible plans for institutional and continuing education of the community through the development of model curricula, the identification and promotion of useful tutorial programs, and the construction of guides for self-study. 4. Certification - Paul Moriarty (pmm@cisco.com) - sage-certify@usenix.org The purpose of the certification working group is to address the issues surrounding certification and discuss the various approaches that might be taken. The working group will present the model along with their recommendations to the board of directors. 5. Job Descriptions - Tina Darmohray (tmd@s1.gov) - sage-jobs@usenix.org The job description group will evaluate SAGE's role in assisting system administrators with defining job descriptions. If it is determined that this is an area that SAGE should pursue, the focus of the group will be to create multiple system administration job description suites that can be used as templates for those who are writing position descriptions for hiring purposes at their own site. 6. Awards - John Detke (jfd@octel.com) - sage-robbies@usenix.org The awards working group will focus how SAGE can best go about recognizing outstanding system administrators, and their achievements. Initial suggestions include a "Best of LISA" award and an annual outstanding sysadmin award. 7. Public Relations - Paul Evans (ple@maspar.com) - sage-pr@usenix.org As a professional society, SAGE has the opportunity to speak out to many factions of industry and/or government on issues that affect us and our profession. This committee will examine the issues, set guidelines to SAGE's involvement in this area, and (if appropriate) determine a plan or focus for the guild to evaluate and pursue (or not pursue). This group will also serve to direct any future public relations issues that may arise. 8. Local Groups - Bjorn Satdeva (bjorn@sysadmin.com) - sage-locals@usenix.org This group will have the task of exploring how the creation of new local groups can be made easier, how SAGE and USENIX can assist in their formation, and how SAGE can support existing local groups. 9. Ethics - Ed Gould (ed@pa.dec.com) - sage-ethics@usenix.org This group is charged with determining SAGE's role in developing a set of guidelines or codes of ethics for the system administrator. We see these guidelines or codes as having at least two purposes, namely, guiding one's self in the performance of system administration tasks, and informing one's employer and co-workers of the proper bounds of system administration. 10. Policies - Lee Damon (nomad@watson.ibm.com) - sage-policies@usenix.org The focus of the policies working group is the consideration of one or several documents for system/network administrators to use as guidelines or boilerplates in setting up their site's policies and procedures. We will also be working with the education and ethics working groups to help systems administrators understand just what policies are, and why they can be important. 11. Vendors - Terry Bartlett (bartlett@rmtc.central.sun.com) - sage-vendors@usenix.org The vendor working group will evaluate SAGE's role in establishing a consensus on the types of tools we'd like vendors to provide for system and network administration. The group may also act as a vendor lobbying organization to convince the various manufacturers to "do the right thing" when it comes to system administration. 12. Standards - Janet Frazer (janet@usl.com) - sage-stds@usenix.org The standards working group will evaluate the potential for SAGE to monitor and affect the various standards bodies that are currently or will be in the future setting standards for system administration. 13. Non-UNIX - John Detke (jfd@octel.com) - sage-outreach@usenix.org The non-UNIX outreach working group will focus on how SAGE can remain pertinent to people who manage computing systems and networks, addressing the issues that cross operating and network system boundaries. 14. Part-Time Admins - Peg Schafer (peg@bbn.com) - sage-pt@usenix.org The part time working group is concerned that the proposed SAGE charter did not mention the large number of people who do system administration less than 100% of the time (e.g., there are chemists who fulfill system administration roles some portion of each working day; yet, they view themselves as chemists, not system administrators). We will consider how SAGE could address the needs of such individuals and propose changes to the proposed SAGE charter which address this "dual-role" reality. 15. Security - Laura de Leon (deleon@hpl.hp.com) & Arnold de Leon (arnold@synopsys.com) - sage-security@usenix.org Security is a growing concern for system administrators. This group will examine ways of helping system administrators assess their need for security and security policies. We will seek ways to educate system administrators on security issues. We will consider soliciting or developing sample policies and tools in this arena. She said that the end results were that the USENIX board passed a series of resolutions to get SAGE "launched". The outstanding issue in this area is that the two Pres.s and the 2 Treas.s from USENIX and SAGE must resolve the differences between the SAGE Bylaws and the USENIX STG Policy. The BOF summary resulted in the feeling that any BOF held at USENIX/LISA might be "better" in that it might be more specifically publicized. The summary of the Sat. meeting was consistent with the meeting notes that have been previously posted. It was noted that the majority of the time at the Sat. meeting was spent on organizational issue, rather than Charter-type issues. 3) Status of Committees It was noted that the Sat. meeting resulted in some new WGs. A discussion was had about the fact that WGs can decide their on fate in that they can propose a possible course of action, or decide that no action should be taken in that area. *Bjorn will call Janet Fraser about the emphasis on the standards WG. As it is currently stated, it is probably inverted. Mailing lists: SAGE mailing lists are going onto usenix-org this afternoon. The WG lists are "open" subscription by default. sw and heads of WGs will be a straight alias. The sage mailing list will be SAGE members. *Elizabeth will see that a SAGE-only announcement goes out on comp.org.usenix and is cross-posted to appropriate groups. *Bjorn will get together with Brent on moving the existing sage mailing lists to usenix. Newsletter: Steve is doing some book reviews. Paul E. is going the Sat. meeting summary. It was decided that SAGE Board nomination information be included in the Newsletter and that the instructions would be to send email to sage-nominations or surface mail to USENIX nominating yourself and giving your email and surface mail address. It was also decided that Bryan would include some description of what a SAGE board member would do (although it isn't entirely certain at this point since no one has done *this* part before). He will also mention the likely commitments that the new Board member would have like: quarterly meetings travel costs phone costs (for phone meetings) time commitment each week email connectivity seems necessary There will be a candidates forum at USENIX/LISA. People can be represented by proxy. *Bjorn will contact Judy/Trent to let them know about the candidate forum and request a room 4) Difference in USENIX STG and SAGE Bylaws How to resolve them SAGE will need to have an opinion on how we'd like the differences to be resolved. The documents have been handed out. 5) MISC We agreed to "post" the approved minutes to the sage mailing list. *John will ask Ellie for the USENIX budget guidelines as the Interim Board will be responsible for setting up next year's budget. Interim Board meetings will be every other week (a uniform and audible sigh of relief was heard). Paul E. has been had an offer from a publisher to publish the SAGE Newsletter. John has had an attorney offer to help SAGE. It was decided that we don't need the publishing or legal help at this time. We will thank them for their interest and let them know that we will keep their offers in mind. 6) Action Items *Bjorn will call Janet Fraser about the emphasis on the standards WG. As it is currently stated, it is probably inverted. *Elizabeth will see that a SAGE-only announcement goes out on comp.org.usenix and is cross-posted to appropriate groups. *Bjorn will get together with Brent on moving the existing sage mailing lists to usenix. *Bjorn will contact Judy/Trent to let them know about the candidate forum and request a room *John will ask Ellie for the USENIX budget guidelines as the Interim Board will be responsible for setting up next year's budget. Minutes of the last meeting were approved. 2) Working group status Pubs -- The first issue is to the printers. There are currently 10-12 people on the list Bryan is ramping up for the August 12 deadline for the next issue. The October is too close to LISA VI and so Bryan is trying to get an extension from Rob Kolstad and Ellie Young. Kevin Smallwood has offered to write a series of articles. Outreach -- Traffic is low. The only one non board member on the list has volunteered to run an outreach BOF at LISA VI PR -- No real traffic. SunWorld has made contact. Paul Evans will talk to Ellie. Local groups -- There are 4 people on the list. Bjorn will be get in touch with contacts shortly. Certify -- 19 members on the list. There has been some light discussion. 3 proposals so far, "all or nothing" "some percent or number of skills for a rating", and "certificates for each skill". So far sentiment is against "all or nothing". Paul Moriarty hopes to have 2-3 proposals to the board in 9-12 months. Security -- There are about 18 members. Interest is high for coming up with a catalog of security tools. Status/summary being sent out tomorrow (7/8/92). Edu -- About 14 people so far. Most have agreed that "education is good". We will be sending short, mid and long term goals On-line -- 19 people so far. Moderate amount of traffic mostly a discussion of the concept. The group is also working on have a check off box for LISA paper authors to allow sage to make their papers available on-line. The group is also working on a vendor neutral bugs database. If sage is going to provide services like WAIS we will need a machine. The Sun 3/180 that is usenix.org does not have the horses. Paul Vixie has offered use of "home machine" if we administer news on it for him. Mark Verber will seek equipment donations from companies. SRI can provide an internet connection. We will ask Paul Vixie about keeping the offer open in case we are unable to get sufficient donations. Conferences -- Steve Simmons is on vacation. Ethics -- Ed Gould is also on vacation. Standards -- 3 people so far. We will clarify to the Janet that we will probably need to create a separate mailing list to act as the focus for the standards process. The working group probably should recommended this to the board. Part time -- 4 people. The group expects to have some language for the charter. Policies -- 6 people. They are in the looking for ideas stage. The group expects to collect existing policies. Vendor -- 5-6 people. No traffic so far except from the moderator The group is coordinating with the on-line group on the vendor neutral bug database. Arch Mott added that there has been many inquiries about Sage on the baylisa-info list. Possible New working groups International -- No new group was created, but Shoshana search the lists for international participants. Training users -- After some discussion and concerns about the size and complexity, no group was created. Mailing list Paul E and Paul M will schedule a meeting between prior and present custodians of the mailing lists to clear up some issues that have arisen with transition. 3) Budget We brainstormed list of possible areas were we will need money budgeted for '93. We need to create a budget for next year. Ideas include: a machine maintenance costs for a machine phone lines election 4 board meetings newsletter promotional materials (like flyers) robbies (awards) postage and mailings workshops 4) Resolving the difference between the STG documents Usenix will allow us to substitute someone else for the treasurer for the meetings with Usenix. Paul Evans would like to attend the meetings. John Detke, Sage treasurer, will talk it over with Paul E to decide who will go. 5) Misc. Paul Moriarty asked if we need to do something unusual in order to take advantage of an offer to help from a member. The member is a recruiter rather than a sys admin. The board decided no action was needed. So far, board members have served the PR role well, since may of us are active conference goers. Unfortunately, we cannot attend them all, not even a fraction of them. And the international conferences are simply out of our reach. As such, I have volunteered to coordinate a group of speakers from within SAGE to represent us at the conferences and other gatherings around the world, as far as we can reach. So, here is what I want from you. All those people interested in representing SAGE at any conferences, workshops, local gathers, etc., please contact me directly. Let me know what conferences you plan to attend over the next year, and I will collect a list of names for each conference, etc. as they come up, putting you all into contact with each and find someone to run a BOF, act as information source, etc. for us all. I and the pubs working group are putting together info packs for you to use at a BOF or similar event, and new member packs are being generated as well. All these materials will be made available to you as you need them and kept up to date by pubs as time passes. If you are interested in this, please let me know. I know of one or two conferences between now an the LISA conference in Long Beach, but would like to hear more about other cons, national and international. I am especially interested in any non-US members who would like to serve as coordinators for their country/region. Thanks. Most of this information is being posted here to facilitate the nomination and election process and reach as much of the community as possible. The first fully elected board takes office in January, 1993, with their first board meeting at the Winter USENIX conference in San Diego, California. Current estimates indicate that the new board will have 4 meetings a year, three at LISA and USENIX main conferences, and a spring meeting. At this time the board members are responsible for travel and lodging expenses for the meeting. This board will be tasked with further defining the charter and mission statements of the guild, setting the 1994 budget, and monitoring, coordinating, and approving all the working groups efforts. Members of the board should expect to be spending significant time every week in the pursuit of these goals during the first year serving the board, after which time requirements should begin to ease a little. Since the board will be geographically diverse and working on so many issues, electronic mail will probably serve as a major conduit of information. This is a major time and money commitment for at least the first year. SAGE is accepting nominations for new members of the governing board from until October 22 at noon, PST. Anyone interested in running for the SAGE board should send their name and telephone number and a brief statement to the nominating committee at the email address sage-nominations@usenix.org. You can also send U.S. Mail to the SAGE Nominating Committee care of the USENIX Association. The nominating committee will gather the candidates' names and contact each of them before the election takes place. At the USENIX LISA conference in Long Beach there will be a candidates' forum to allow prospective board members to introduce themselves and talk about the issues. Prospective board members unable to make it to the LISA conference will be able to submit a position paper to this forum. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bryan McDonald | Computer, Hardware, And Operations Support bigmac@erg.sri.com | CHAOS Postmaster-Systems Administrator | ITAD - SRI International -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From sage-postmaster Sat Aug 29 19:37:35 1992 Received: by usenix.ORG (4.0/1.29-emg890317) id AA09125; Sat, 29 Aug 92 19:37:35 PDT Received: from irving.nas.nasa.gov by usenix.ORG (4.0/1.29-emg890317) id AA09119; Sat, 29 Aug 92 19:37:23 PDT Received: by irving.nas.nasa.gov (5.61/1.34) id AA03463; Sat, 29 Aug 92 19:37:00 -0700 Message-Id: <9208300237.AA03463@irving.nas.nasa.gov> From: pomeranz@nas.nasa.gov (Hal Pomeranz) Date: Sat, 29 Aug 1992 19:37:00 -0700 X-Mailer: Mail User's Shell (7.2.4 2/2/92) To: sage@usenix.ORG Subject: World Conference on Network Administration and Security Sender: sage-postmaster@usenix.ORG CALL FOR PAPERS AND PRE-ANNOUNCEMENT The 1992 World Conference On Network Administration and Security November 30 - December 4 Washington, DC THEME: Practical solutions for cost-effective network administration and security in a UNIX environment. ELIGIBILITY: Network administrators, system administrators, security administrators, technology managers, computer installation managers, and their staff. In addition, a limited number of places are available for staff members from organizations that offer off-the-shelf software and hardware products that support network management and security. LOCATION: Ramada Renaissance Techworld Hotel 919 9th Street NW Washington, D.C. 20019 (202) 898-9000 CONFERENCE DATES: Courses: November 30- December 1 Technical Sessions: December 2- December 4 INFORMATION: For pre-registration materials, send mail to: Conference Office World Conference On Network Administration and Security 4610 Tournay Road Bethesda, MD 20816 or send email to paller@fedunix.org. HOST ORGANIZATION: The Washington Area UNIX Users Group and the Federal Network Administration Council. CONFERENCE SPONSOR: the Open Systems Conference Board, a not-for-profit educational organization dedicated to removing the barriers to widespread adoption of UNIX and Open Systems. WHY YOU SHOULD PARTICIPATE: The demands of mission critical applications are driving the need for network innovation at an amazing pace. New technology and new standards promote confusion and interoperability problems while at the same time providing much needed connectivity and increased bandwidth. Cutbacks have forced fewer people to provide more service with less money. These challenges are particularly apparent and frustrating in the government agencies (both in the US and abroad), universities, and companies which have been in the vanguard of the move to open systems and networks of UNIX computers. This conference is designed to identify the current state of the art for cost-effective network administration and security so that the techniques and tools used by the most effective managers can be adopted by those still looking for solutions. Peer-reviewed papers will be complemented with invited papers plus "Ask the Experts" sessions where you'll find practical answers to your questions. "Best Of The Net" session where you'll learn which free programs available from the net are most useful. "Tips and Techniques" sessions in which conference attendees can share, in 5-minute presentations, their favorite techniques for solving recurring problems. These sessions are run as moderated BOFs with all conference attendees being asked, in advance, to contribute if they choose. "Ask OSF" session where you can learn from the people who brought you DCE. Informal Birds Of A Feather sessions in the evening to expand the sharing time. Please send your suggestions for topics with your registration. In addition, the Monday-Tuesday courses will be taught by several of America's top-rated instructors, including Matt Bishop, Rob Kolstad, Bruce Hunter, Richard Stevens, Marcus Ranum, and Tom Christiansen. Course topics include TCP/IP and UNIX Network Programming, UNIX Security, OSF DCE and DME, UNIX Fundamentals, UNIX Internals, UNIX System and Network Administration (Basic and Advanced courses), and Perl Programming. ********************* ** CALL FOR PAPERS ** ********************* Papers are being sought for the technical conference from network administrators, system administrators, security managers, consultants, academics, and hardware and software developers. You don't have to have made a major breakthrough to have your paper accepted. The delegates will be looking for good problem definitions and practical solutions. Proposals must be submitted by Wednesday, September 30th. This workshop is expected to focus on real life experiences with and tools for administering networks that are not simple and well understood. Some particular areas of interest are: 1) High speed networking; how well are FDDI and higher-speed protocols working in the real world? 2) Low speed networking; now that you can buy dial-up IP, what do you do to administer it? 3) Large scale networks; what do you do when your network is an order of magnitude larger than the ones your vendors use? 4) Multi-protocol networks; so you've got IP, OSI, DECnet, Appletalk, Novell, and Chaosnet on your network, now how do you make sense of it? 5) Young networks and old networks; building networks from scratch and rebuilding old networks that have reached the end of their extensibility. We are seeking an energetic person with the following qualifications: * Good administrative and planning skills * Experience in the administration of large installations * Good public speaking skills * Knowledge of timely and appropriate topics in the field * Ability to solicit good panel members and appropriate speakers * Attendance at previous LISA workshops/conferences * Time to invest to insure success of the conference Proposals should be brief (1 page) and should include the following: Statement of Purpose (e.g., why you think this would be a good idea.) Form of submissions (e.g., abstracts, extended abstracts or full papers?) Format (e.g., 2 or 3 days of technical sessions, panel sessions, etc.) List of topics to be addressed (as in the call for papers) Special features (such as having tutorials, BOFs, vendor demos) List of potential program committee members and/or a co-chair* Biography and references * While most USENIX conferences have had an individual chair, proposals requesting a co-chair and/or small program committee are welcome. Please address all inquiries and proposals to the Association's executive director, Ellie Young (ellie@usenix.org) . It was agreed that is is drifting away from what we originally had in mind. It was suggested that we stress at the USENIX/LISA conference that SAGE is a professional society. Also that we encourage local groups. 3) Budget Elizabeth stated that our budget was still in flux as many large portions of it were yet to be determined as they are dependent on the USENIX budget (e.g. SAGE's portion of the USENIX office costs). However, the SAGE travel budget for officers getting to meetings was set at $4K. There was concern that this is very small do be distributed over all SAGE officers for ~4 meetings/year. It was agreed that we would like the travel budget to be increased, within the constraint that we be able to keep SAGE membership fee to $30. 4) STG document and bylaws A general feeling that this document is cumbersome was expressed. There was a long discussion on the STG terms that referred to local groups. It was decided that further discussion on the STG might best be done via email. * Pat Wilson volunteered to number the document and post it so that comments by the group could be made via email and referenced by page/paragraph number. * (Brave?) Board members are to go over the document and use email to submit comments/questions/concerns/changes. 5) Working group status EDZ reports that SAGE-jobs, SAGE-security, and SAGE-policy have shown some traffic lately. 6) SAGE BOF at U.LISA Elizabeth and Laura (if she attends) volunteered to run the BOF at U.LISA. 6) Misc. After 4 weeks of mailings, I will incorporate most of the following -in a distilled fashion into an info sheet. The purpose is to discuss the issues around management AND system administration. This includes: .I am an administrator -how do I make my boss aware of the real issues when he's a basic dork who couldn't spell adminestrutor right twice in a row. .How does a technical person work for a non-technical manager. .What makes managers tick and how can I get them to tick for me. .System administration is not a recognized "profession" but it is challenging and much more technically intensive than simple coding -how can I open my boss's eyes to how important and challenging the work is. .I need a manager to help me talk to another manager about the real problems he will face. My boss won't beleive me, but may listen to a disinterested 3rd party. .Why aren't managers seemingly interested in crucial issues that can affect the productivity of their whole engineering staff. .etc Basic ground rules --- 1. I am not interested in the gory details of war stories of how big bad management likes to eat pore little administrators. I am interested in what people are doing to get managers to listen to the issues. 2. I am interested in collecting a set of issues that administrators have with management, categorizing them, and then in a working group -or whatever developing approaches to addressing those issues. 3. I am interested in developing the Rob Kolstead survey information into something that can be selectively presented to management as truly representative of "our industry". I don't completely know what this means yet, but I have seen the herding instinct work well in managers --( "Oh charly has 5 administrators -well we better have 5 of them thar things too ...) 4. I would like to develop a network of support. This is different than a support group in that all snivelers and whiners can find the door right now. I am purely interested in what will work to get a "china white" pipeline of information travelling between administrators and management. I am not interested in just data, but information which means that there is something beyond factoids in what is being passed around between people. Part of what we have to do is find out what that something else is and nurture it. 5. I would like us to discuss issues of presentation of information upward and outward. Ie we can all talk to each other in enough of a shorthand to exclude many many bright and interested people from the discussions. I would like us to look at how to present information so as to include people not exclude them (Stop that snickering in the back row there ...) Last -I am open to what else we should do beyond this that fosters our ability to work hand in hand with management so that we become a team and not a group of co-dependent ninnies -hanging onto each other but never truly supporting each other. Oh yes - The last system I truly hands on administered was System III. I was OS manager at Onyx, Dorado (for a teensy bit), and then Software and network development Manager at Arete, Arix -Third Party and services manager at Arete, a consultant for innumerable years -primarily in process automation (IE a PE in control systems engineering - not a wayward MIS director). Currently I am manager of Development Engineering Services at Octel, where my administrators threaten to sew my elbows to my hands if I try to do anything that resembles real administration ever again.... And so it goes. To join the list mail to Majordomo@USENIX.org in the BODY ofthe message say subscribe sage-managers Until then.... By way of introduction, a bunch of people in Australia have been working in recent months toward setting up an Australian SAGE. We've been communication mostly with Elizabeth Zwicky. This week, at a major workshop in Brisbane, we expect to see the formalisation of this group. In the following discussion, where I say things like "it will be", you should understand that to mean "so long as the members agree, and where relevent, SAGE agrees, everyone else agrees, and no-one comes up with a better suggestion then volunteers, ... it will be ...". Initially Australian SAGE will be created as an independent body so that there can be an elected representative group who can then go off and negotiate with the other interested parties. The people who have put the most effort into establishing this are Hal Miller , Frank Crawford , Glenn Huxtable , and myself, Greg Rose . Three of the four of us are also committee members of AUUG, which is affiliated with USENIX. One of the first questions which will have to be resolved is at what level Australian SAGE will cooperate with AUUG. Another of the questions which will then need to be addressed soon afterwards is what level of formality we should adopt in our relationships with SAGE. I phrased that fairly carefully -- there is no question in our minds that the *level* of *cooperation* should be high in both directions. However SAGE is a part of USENIX and that may or may not complicate *how* we cooperate. This leads me to the questions. We would like to see discussions leading towards the establishment of an "umbrella" organisation to tie all (both) of the SAGEs together. Depending on arrangements, this might be US-SAGE or it might be a separate tiny body. Either way we need a forum for discussions, since the distance makes it impossible for any real quantity of discussions to happen face-to-face. I'll be at San Diego USENIX though, and happy to meet with people. Now the easier question. Could we establish a sage-international working group and mailing list please? This has already been discussed, ages ago, and in fact led to Hal and I getting together (even though we work in the same building, I had no idea he was interested in SAGE...) I will happily moderate the working group, or I believe Hal is also willing, or we might agree on another person. The proposed group uses the default proposal or modifies it The proposed group presents their proposal for approval to the Board. * Bjorn will summarize this discussion and post to SAGE-locals as there are some locals wanting to form now. 3) January USENIX There will be a SAGE Board meeting Tuesday. There will be an open SAGE Board meeting Wed. during the dinner hour. There will be a BOF after the open SAGE Board meeting Wed.; Steve Simmons runs a good BOF. 4) MISC * EDZ will get USENIX to send her the updated SAGE membership so that the SAGE mailing list can be updated. There was discussion that the email re: USENIX/SAGE representatives to WCSAS was unclear. * EDZ will send mail to Ellie and Alan Paller letting them know that 2 (new) SAGE representatives to the WCSAS will be identified after the SAGE elections. If USENIX also identifies Tom C./Rob K. that would be separate from SAGE representatives. The next meeting is Dec. 8. I tried not to subscribe people who were on the mailing list already, but programs are only so smart about these things, and if you were subscribed to the mailing list at one address, and put a different one on your SAGE membership form, you are now subscribed at both addresses. I apologize. Send mail to "majordomo@usenix.org" with "unsubscribe sage address-you-don't-want" in the body of the message, and "address-you-don't-want" will be unsubscribed. Elizabeth D. Fortunately for both me and SAGE, we have trained professionals dealing with these issues. I will forward this request on to them, but I thought everybody might like the address for future reference.
