From mchristensen at humantech.com Fri Jun 25 08:03:00 2004 From: mchristensen at humantech.com (Mark Christensen) Date: Fri, 25 Jun 2004 11:03:00 -0400 Subject: Trying to start a Sage local group in Ann Arbor, MI Message-ID: I signed up on this list to lurk for a while, but I haven't seen any traffic in the last couple of weeks. So, I don't yet know what is considered appropriate for the list. But, I am working on setting up a local System Administrators group here in the Detroit Ann Arbor area, and I would like some feedback from folks with more experience in this than me. So far, I have gathered about a dozen interested folks in the last couple of weeks of informal conversations with friends and colleagues. I have also located a space for our meetings, so things are moving forward on the logistical front. I would however, like some advice on how to get the word out to other SA's in our area. I am trying to get listed in our local newspaper's calendar. I'm also looking for resources we can use to set up a web page for our meeting schedule and as well as a simple list-server for the group. I could probably host things on a server here at my company, but that's would only be a temporary solution. ___________________________________ Mark Christensen, IT Manager Humantech, Inc. 734-663-3330 ext. 128 www.humantech.com ___________________________________ Mark Christensen, IT Manager Humantech, Inc. 734-663-3330 ext. 128 www.humantech.com From robert at timetraveller.org Fri Jun 25 09:36:36 2004 From: robert at timetraveller.org (Robert Brockway) Date: Fri, 25 Jun 2004 12:36:36 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Trying to start a Sage local group in Ann Arbor, MI In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: On Fri, 25 Jun 2004, Mark Christensen wrote: > I would however, like some advice on how to get the word out to other Visit LUGs and other user groups in person. See if you can speak to the club for 5 minutes. A lot of Sysadmins hang out at such groups. Emphasise that different levels of skill will be catered too. Many people assume any such group is for the experienced only. Make sure the meetings to cater to different levels of skill. Local University mailing lists and news groups are good too. I founded a Unix User Group (http://www.humbug.org.au) which has been going strong for close to 9 years. I don't remember doing a huge amount of advertising to start with (mainly discussions with people at university, and posts to relevant lists and newsgroups) and I had 25 people turn up for the inaugural meeting (not bad for 1995). > page for our meeting schedule and as well as a simple list-server for > the group. They are often happy to host web sites & lists for an emerging group. HTH.
