As a member (and sometimes steering committee member) of a local group, I seem to recall an official policy posted *somewhere* that essentially *encouraged* local groups to post their meeting announcements to the SAGE list. (Maybe these should go to the announce list instead of the discussion list?) I have looked around the SAGE web site, but can not now find a specific reference to this. It would be nice to get a clarification on this, and have it accessible on the web. Thanks. -Dan -- Daniel E. Wearing my "Vice-President" hat, I can say the following: - The history in SAGE-AU was to promote local groups posting so that (a) new members find out about the group, and (b) travelling members might like to drop by while in town. - Front line peer support in the form of local groups is a vital part of SAGE, and this is one way to promote these groups. - The SAGE Exec will be meeting on Tuesday, and (time allowing) we will discuss this issue. This is the first time that we've had feedback on these postings, and they normally total only a few a month. Next Meeting: Topic: DMCA - Digital Millenium Copyright Act Speaker: Bruce Schneier, Counterpane Internet Security Date/Time: November 15, 2001 7:00 pm Location: Malcolm Moos Health Sciences Tower, room 2-690 Synopsis: The TCSA meeting will not be held. The following talk is taking place at the same time and it is of general interest to the TCSA members. The following press release describes the talk. The talk is sponsored by the SFC (Students for Fair Copyright) organization at the University of Minnesota. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- November 6, 2001 SFC Sponsors Lecture on DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) Bruce Schneier to speak about the DMCA "Welcome to 21st Century America, where the profits of the major record labels, movie houses, and publishing companies are more important than First Amendment rights." Bruce Schneier, as quoted in http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/20932.html For additional information: Megan Carney, mcarney at acm.cs.umn.edu, 612-232-4495 When: November 15, 7:00 Where: Malcolm Moos Health Sciences Tower, room 2-690 515 Delaware Street SE University of Minnesota Minneapolis, MN 55455 Map of location: http://onestop.umn.edu/Maps/MoosT/index.html OPEN TO THE PUBLIC MINNEAPOLIS-- Bruce Schneier, an internationally known cryptographer and author, will be speaking on the University of Minnesota East Bank campus on November 15th about the DMCA. After the lecture there will be an opportunity for the audience to ask questions. Currently he serves on the advisory board of Electronic Privacy Information Center, a public interest research center in Washington, D.C.. He writes and speaks frequently on the topics of cryptography, computer security, and privacy. In July of this year he spoke before the United States Senate in a hearing on internet security. He is the author of "Applied Cryptography", and "Secrets and Lies: Digital Security in a Networked World", as well as various other books and articles on security and the DMCA. First amendment rights are threatened by the DMCA, because the law makes it illegal to circumvent copyright protection even if doing so falls under the scope of fair use. In an July 30, 2001 opinion piece http://www.msnbc.com/news/607194.asp?0dm=C12PT&cp1=1 Richard Smith describes what the DMCA means for research and free speech, "Authors and publishers need copyright protection to be properly compensated for the time and money put into writing a book, composing a song, or creating a screenplay. But the DMCA goes too far in its zeal to protect copyrights. It ends up stepping all over the free speech rights of researchers in the fields of cryptography, security, and privacy." It has effectively chilled security research in the United States to the point that experts from other countries are afraid to come to conferences here. It has trampled on traditional free speech rights and replaced them with laws designed to protect the profits of corporations. In order for the public to protect its interests in free speech and fair use rights, the public must first understand what the DMCA means to them. Our purpose in sponsoring these lectures is to help educate the public so that they can begin to protect their rights.
